Freak of the Week — September 28th 

Thanks to everyone who could make it to our exhibit opening yesterday!  I think I’ll hold off and post those pictures until Monday, but you can see a few shots up on our Facebook page.  Plus, you should ‘like’ us on Facebook anyway, since I’ve only got 59 likes and it’s a little lonely in that corner of the Internet.  I post all kinds of stuff over there — so get to it, loyal followers! 

Here’s your Friday weirdo, our Freak of the Week!  I’m pretty sure most of you already know what bones these are, but who are they from?  If you can’t determine species, muse over these questions; what are the benefits of this kind of structure?  Are you able to infer where this animal lives? Why would it have this unique adaptation?

  8. somuchscience answered: Definitely fused cervical vertebrae and altas. Fused indicates they don’t move their necks (aka cetaceans). The occipitals are huge… Minke?
